Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?
Sure thing, I’ll summarize them with a major attribute, and then go into a little more detail to explain.
Rex: Loyalty.
Somewhat counterintuitive for someone who was exiled to a prison world as a child for someone else’s crime and grew up around underworld types, Rex is unshakeable in his loyalty to his friends.
Much of this can be seen to stem from the fact that on Delta-13, the only things of real value are your word and your friends. Anything else can be taken away by the authorities, and being friendless or unreliable is often to be dead.
For Rex, this taps into his naturally honest and fair personality and causes him to unblinkingly confront assassins and celestial beings for his friends.
Wellesley: Responsibility.
Built for management, responsibility comes naturally to Wellesley and he always looks for the best practical outcome for his friends and allies.
Conscious of his wartime experience, Wellesley puts meticulous thought into his advice and knows vividly that many people’s lives hang on his assessments.
Lily: Discovery.
An intensely curious woman by nature, Lily has devoted her life to uncovering the mysteries of the mind and understanding what makes people do the things they do.
Extreme cases, unknown mental disorders, mysterious psychological afflictions, all are fascinating to Lily and she jumps at the chance to help those that are suffering from them.
But what no one else knows is that her pursuits are fueled by a condition that she’s managed to keep secret for most of her life.
Gromyko: Enthusiasm.
Growing up on Delta-13 presented Gromyko with two options: Be crushed by the bleakness of life until he dies forgotten, or be a Superman to inspire hope.
Being the great man that he is, he chose to be a Superman, and he lives life just as close to the edge as he can while trying to free the people of Delta-13 from their unjust imprisonment.
Many see his actions as self-aggrandizing self-promotion, but in truth, they are actually motivated by a deep attachment to the people of Delta-13 and an unrestrained love of life.
Ugo: Idealism.
A true intellectual and idealogue, Ugo believes that the only path for humanity is through pure freedom of the mind.
Naturally an explorer, the Empire’s heavy-handed control tactics offended him personally and drove him to radical freedom movements promising to release humanity from the chains it’s been bound by. Even if the cost is a bloody galactic civil war that would leave many human worlds open to attack from aliens.
In other areas of life, he’s a very balanced and reasonable man that tries to find the best outcome for everyone. But in the name of his idea of “freedom”, there’s no one that he won’t sacrifice.
What is your favorite part of A Son of the Shadows and why?
My favorite part has to be when Rex and Gromyko go out to contact the Order operative and run into the authorities. I won’t spoil it for those that haven’t read it, but Rex and Gromyko act very naturally and smoothly in concert, and the scene is so dynamic that it’s one of my overall favorite scenes in the whole series.
How did you come up with the name “A Son of the Shadows”?
I came up with it while brainstorming titles with my brother. We were trying out different possible titles, and shuffling a list of words to draw inspiration from when my mind caught on “Shadows”.
I really liked the mystique of it, and since darkness plays such a role in the book, it seemed like a really great starting place. So we started working on what could go with “Shadows” to fill out the title, and give a weighty feeling for the book.
We settled on “A Son of the Shadows” since it has a double meaning for the protagonist Rex.
Firstly, he’s an orphan and was raised “in the shadows” on Delta-13, so it’s a pretty direct connection.
But the second is because of the dark “shadow” power that guides his destiny and shapes who he is. Metaphorically, he is a “son” to the power since he wouldn’t exist without it, and it’s the whole reason why he’s a significant person.
Have you written any other books that are not published?
Yes, I’ve got a couple that haven’t been published. For the most part, they’re Western short stories that I wrote before starting in on the Earthborn Saga, but there are a few fantasy books as well.
Westerns hold a special place for me, so someday I’d like to write up a few more stories and release a new collection of short stories.

Meeting SATURN
First of all, I was under the mistaken impression that this book was a collection of stories about the planet Saturn. It isn’t.
What it is, is a wonderful assortment of 20 science fiction and fantasy stories, SOME of which are, in fact, based on the lovely ringed planet. Others are about time travel, wizards, working in space, brain transplants… so much good stuff. You can even learn who the Chosen One is…and there isn’t a midi-chlorian in sight. Bokerah Brumley, who in addition to editing the anthology, is apparently the “peafowl wrangler,” has done a superb job giving us a little bit of everything.
The stories range in length, so there’s one for every bit of time you might have, whether waiting in the car, COVID-style, for someone at the doctor’s office, or that precious few minutes just before falling asleep. (but word to the wise– DON’T read You Will Be Uploaded at bedtime!)
As a romance writer, one of my personal favorites was The Lords of Titan, by G. Scott Huggins, which shows just how far some men will go for love. I also really admired They Also Serve by Rob and Karina Fabian. Anyone who’s been short might predict the ending of this one ahead of time. But each of the stories has its own appeal. Highly recommend!!

A few years ago, I read my first romance novel and I was hooked, so much so that I decided to give the idea of writing a story a chance. Love, courage, hope, and second chances are a few of my favorite themes. My stories include a fair amount of sarcasm, suspense, steam, and violence. One of the joys of writing is weaving your own experiences into your stories. In the process, you can relive precious moments from your past, even as you transform them into so-called fiction.
The background for my latest release borrows a lot from the first international trip I took with my husband, almost four decades ago. Though he’d wooed me with tales of his peregrinations in Europe and Asia, and we’d driven across the U.S. twice during the first six months of our relationship, we’d never been abroad. For our first foreign adventure (the first of many), we spent a week in Jamaica. Our home base was a beach hotel near Montego Bay; from there, we explored many parts of the island. We took a trail ride into the mountains and a boat excursion through a swamp. We visited the famous wedding cake waterfall in Ocho Rios, toured a ruined plantation deep in the jungle, and skinny-dipped in the crystal blue waters of a grotto off the lava cliffs in Negril. By the time we headed home, I felt as though I’d spent a month in a totally new world. Though K. and I have since traveled to every continent except Australia, those Jamaica experiences left an indelible mark.
When I decided to write a vampire tale with a difference, those memories came back to me. I didn’t want a typical European creature of the night, pale and aristocratic, an obvious cousin of Bram Stoker’s infamous count. Instead, I created a dark-skinned Caribbean blood-drinker who’d been a slave in the nineteenth century, abused, tortured and ultimately turned by his evil mistress. I remembered the eerie atmosphere of the plantation we’d visited, the shadows that cloaked the surrounding forest even during the day, the air so still it was hard to breathe. That seemed a perfect home for my tragic and lonely hero, Etienne de Rémorcy. I renamed the place “Fin d’Espoir” – the end of hope. Meanwhile, Madeleine and Troy, the couple who intrude into his solitude and are snared by his beauty and power, have some similarities to my husband and me – young, somewhat innocent, and hungry for new experiences.
Aside from Fin d’Espoir, other scenes from our expedition made it into the book as well. The story begins when Maddy’s trail horse bolts and carries her into the wilderness. It comes to a climax under a full moon in Negril. In between, all three characters discover a forbidden but sustaining love that can sustain them, even in the face of darkness.

The stranger loomed over her, a huge man-shaped shadow. Full night had arrived, and Maddy could see nothing of the man’s features. She shivered and felt her heartbeat quicken once again. She was lost and alone, crippled by an ankle that was sprained if not broken. What could she do to protect herself?
He sank on his haunches next to her aching, muddy body. “Are you hurt, Miss?” he asked, his vowels rounded by the traces of French. Maddy’s fear melted in the warmth of that rich voice. The scent of roses tickled her nostrils. The pain in her ankle dwindled to an occasional annoying twinge.
The man’s skin reminded her of the Blue Mountain coffee she and Troy had enjoyed at breakfast, a brown so dark it was almost black. Raindrops gleamed on his smooth cheeks and pooled in the hollow of his throat. Looking at him made her thirsty. He was powerfully built, with massive shoulders swelling out from his worn denim vest. Underneath, his muscled chest was bare. A tight frizz of black hair grew in the furrow between his breasts.
As he crouched at her side, his jeans stretched taut over his thighs but hung loosely around his narrow hips. Another line of kinky curls ran down from his navel to disappear under his waistband.
His face was the visage of a Nubian king, prominent cheekbones and a fleshy nose with elegant, flared nostrils. His liquid-brown eyes were set wide apart, in deep sockets protected by the fine arch of his brows. His proud forehead rose above them, up to the tight-knit black frizz that covered his skull.
And his mouth… Maddy couldn’t stop herself from staring at those full lips, mahogany-red against his rosewood-dark face. They were parted in a half-smile that revealed the pearly white of perfect teeth. An image flashed through Maddy’s mind, that kinky head bent to her breast, those sensual lips fastened on her nipple. Her nubs tightened under her soaked shirt, their ache completely distracting her from her injured ankle.
“Miss? Are you in pain?” That voice tore her away from her sudden fantasy, commanding her attention.
“Uh—my ankle. It caught beneath me when I fell.”
“Let me see.”
She struggled to rise to a half-sit, resting her weight on her elbows, and stretched out her right leg.
She blushed when she saw how filthy she was, but her companion didn’t seem to notice.
He cradled her heel in one hand, palpating her ankle with the other. His hand was large enough to completely enclose her foot. He prodded the area above her instep.
“Ay!” She winced as fiery pain raced up her leg. “Ow! Damn!”
“That hurts, I gather.” He studied her flesh. “It is quite inflamed. I cannot tell if the bone is intact, but it should be bound in any case.” He supported her back with his left arm, slipping his right under her knees.
“What? Wait!” A wave of dizziness swept over her. The man raised her from the ground as though she weighed nothing. The next thing she knew, he was carrying her into the darkness. “No, please…” Her helplessness rekindled her fear. She struggled against his grip. His arms were like iron bands around her back and hips. His laugh at her futile efforts was edged with mockery.
“Should I leave you then, injured and alone in the forest? I think you would soon change your mind. In these forgotten valleys, there are many creatures of the night, creatures far more dangerous than I. These hills are soaked in the blood of the Maroons who fought and died to free themselves from their colonial masters. Some of them still walk, animated by perpetual hate for anyone with white skin. Not to mention the cruel gods the slaves brought with them on their nightmare journeys from Africa. They flourish here, among the memories of vengeance and death.”
Maddy shuddered in the stranger’s arms. A chill crept through her limbs. She couldn’t stop shaking. She whimpered, the denim of his vest rough against her cheek, breathing the scent of roses. Her captor—her savior?—strode through the trees, sure of every step. All at once, he stopped and peered down at her.
“You are in shock, girl. Stop fighting and let me help you.” His melodious voice soothed her, calming the tremors a bit. She relaxed into his strength as he resumed his brisk pace, cradling her body against his chest.
The storm’s fury had dwindled. A warm drizzle pattered against the leafy canopy above their heads.
Thunder rolled faintly in the distance. Maddy closed her eyes and allowed herself to drift.
A flash of lightning brought her back to awareness. In the momentary glare, she saw the building that had drawn her into the valley, much closer now. It was a ruin, a hulking mass of charred pillars and tumbled walls overgrown with vines. A lone chimney pointed at the sky like an accusing finger. She gasped at desolate scene.
Feeling her body tense, her captor halted. Even in the dark, she could make out the outlines of the derelict mansion.
“Fin d’Espoir plantation.” His voice was colder than before. Maddy heard the echoes of anger and sorrow. “Home.”

William Lee Gordon: The Inspiration for the Here Comes Earth Series
This is my first book and my first series. It is a story I had to write. I spent years being fascinated by accounts of ancient earth as well as the thought of other civilizations inhabiting our galaxy. The way my mind works, I am always trying to find a theory that fits the facts, solves mysteries, answers questions, and explains everything – from ‘What is the origin of man?’ to ‘Are we alone in the universe – and if not, where is everyone?’ to ‘What is the meaning of life?’
Over the years, as I started to theorize potential answers, I realized I was creating a grand mosaic. I also realized the magic would be in unveiling these answers in an unfolding story.
It was only then that I started putting any thought into the protagonists and antagonists – and discovered the joy in creating characters that were as realistic as I could make them.
Once all of this came together, the story poured out of me and very smoothly filled pages. My biggest insight, however, came after I finished. After seeking so many answers for so long I came to an unexpected conclusion – humanity is heroic after all…
