Yippee-kai-yay, mother…..#MFRWHooks

Just because we have a wonderful love story in SIXSHOOTER doesn’t mean all is sweetness and light. Oh, no. Each of our three lovebirds has a past, and one more frightening than the rest. Alien Nik, who is alternately Nicholas or Nikki, has come from a very dark place, but hides it from their companions:

The entire experience unnerved Nik. They wouldn’t complain to Valeni, because she had made that choice based on need, to save them both from the Agency’s threats.

But something in the cloaked man’s voice had triggered a long-held fear from Nik’s past. That arrogant sense of entitlement to command… the veiled threat… the way he took over the small space. He ordered everyone around and no one balked at the words. Nik had the impression that he could have as easily ordered his minions to harm either Valeni or Nik and they would have done so, just as silently and efficiently.

But his tone was the key that threatened to unblock their memories, to undo the temporary protections that had saved them since they’d run from their home world. They had survived a genocide—

the screams of their brothers and sisters

the barking commands of the Overseers as they shot down those who resisted

               the pain of loss

red, red, red, the auras snuffed out one by one

the scramble through black woods to the spaceport

               the darkness

They shuddered at the flashes of terror that threatened to fill their mind until they froze, overwhelmed.

And he saw through our human disguise. No one had ever done that before. Does he know who we are? Will he report us to the Overseers?

“No!” Nik jumped up, galvanized by a rush of adrenaline.

Valeni gasped, startled. “What is it?”

Breathing heavily, Nik gradually forced calm, forced the memories back into safety.               “A drink,” they said.

Valeni cocked an eyebrow and glanced over at Nik. “A drink?”

               “Yes. Please.”

She frowned. “I don’t think we have anything left aboard except that horrible homemade stuff Jowalt’s friend pawned off on us last time we were in Roandock.” She studied Nik’s face. “This run really got to you, didn’t it?”

“I would not like to talk about it. Just… an alcoholic beverage. Something to help forget.”

They felt their hands shaking and grabbed the end of the arms on their chair, hoping it would steady them.

Val reached over and patted Nik’s arm. “No problem. I know just the place.”

BLURB:

Valeni Pascual wants to be free to make a living hauling cargo with her spaceship and to understand the shapeshifting alien who presents sometimes as the steamy male Nik and other times as the blonde bombshell Nikki.

As a rebel insurgence builds against the oppressive government known as the Agency, Valeni and Nik/Nikki encounter a sexy Terran cowboy named Garrett Rawls. Since being pulled into this region of space by another mysterious wormhole, Garrett has looked for a way to return to Earth. After meeting Valeni and Nikki, he might have found something worth staying for.

However, dark forces may have a much bigger picture in mind for all of them. Valeni, Nik/Nikki, and Garrett are pulled into a life and death fight that lays bare all of their secrets and their desires. Will they lose everything as the battle against the Agency rages around them or can love pull them through?

EXCERPT:

Maryam finished cooking and stood in the hall, holding a thermos of hot coffee in one hand and an egg sandwich half-wrapped in aluminum foil in the other. How angry was he? What is he going to do to her?

Adam strode toward her, grumbling and fumbling with his belt buckle. “Eight months of work shot to hell.” He stopped. His glower transformed into a grin that reached his hazel eyes. “What’s this?”

She plastered on a smile and batted her lashes at a speed almost matching the cadence of her heart. “I thought you could take it with you.”

His shoulders relaxed. He held her face in his hands. “You’re something else, Mary. You know—” he sprayed her lips with kisses “—I owe you a honeymoon. How about I arrange one?”

“I’d like that.”

He pressed her backward, pinning her between his body and the wall. The heat reignited and waved through her, burning away any fear or anxiety. He might have been angry, but not with her, and he would not take it out on her. She balanced the sandwich and mug in her hands. Her breathing got heavier with each nip to her neck. “Adam.”

He stepped back and reached into her robe. “Mary,” he groaned and yanked her panties from her hips while uttering a dua. Already moist white lace and satin fell to her feet. He propped against the wall across from her and ripped open his pants snap and zipper. “When you say my name like that, I gotta have you.”

“But your friend.”

“Will wait.” His rough hands spanned up her thighs and clenched her rear, lifting her. His breath rushed into her ear. “I want you now. Do you want this D or not?”

His throbbing stiffness titillated her fiery folds. “Yes.” She locked her legs around his hips at her ankles and squeezed his broad shoulders as he stretched and filled her. “Adam, please.” She slowly blinked at the bobbing picture of Mecca hanging on the opposite as he bounced her on his stiffness. The movement of their bodies fed a mounting desire. Their first time together had been so tender. He had eased her fears and brought her to ecstasy. Now, the raw lust surging between them infused every inch of her in a way she had never felt before. It was all so glorious. She tucked her heels under his tense bottom, stilling his thrusts and unleashing a carnal shriek from deep inside. He soon roared in release and set her down. She panted, leaning against the wall and letting her legs drop. He trailed pecks up her neck before stealing her air with a lingering kiss on her lips. He pinned her gaze while adjusting and closing his pants. “You don’t know what you do to me, Mary. I’ve never wanted someone so much.” He disappeared into the kitchen. Water ran for a moment before he came back, taking the thermos and crushed sandwich from her hands. “I’ll be back in time for the next prayer.” He offered salams and bit into it, strutting away and disappearing into the morning light, flooding the opened door.

BOOK TRAILER:

Excerpt:

Something lodged in the back of Chloe’s throat. She wasn’t sure if it was dust or fear or maybe a mixture of both.

The tall rider reined around that strawberry roan and headed straight for the depot. From what she could see of his demeanor, he did not appear to be pleased.

As the distance closed between them, Chloe got a better look at this stranger who had been arguing with Billy. He sat easy in a well-worn saddle, a tall, long-legged rider with wide shoulders and a soft touch on the reins. His cream-colored duster flapped in the sporadic wind and slapped at the haunches of the big roan. A sweat-stained hat remained steady on his head. Sunlight glinted off the pistol holstered on his left hip and skittered along the polished wooden stock of the rifle sheathed near the back of the saddle.

He reached the depot and dismounted, his boots stirring up a cloud of dust. After tying leather reins to a hitching ring, he vaulted onto the platform. Well-worn boots made rhythmic progress across creaky wooden planks.

Stopping in front of Chloe, he nudged his hat upward just enough to reveal an unusually handsome face. A day’s growth of whiskers was dark but not particularly thick for a man of his age, which Chloe guessed was somewhere in the early to mid-thirties. His nose was fairly straight and not too long. Gray eyes held curious speckles of green. Dark brown hair, long and thick, was tied back with a strip of leather. Canvas jeans molded to long legs and hugged the ankles of dusty riding boots. His right hand cupped over a trim hip, while his left hand fingered the handle of a holstered pistol she now recognized as a .45-caliber Peacemaker.

Chloe had never seen anything look so good and so dangerous at the same time. An embarrassing throb settled deep in her lap and she felt her cheeks tingle from a tell-tale flush. The mere presence of a man had never moved her like this.

“Are you Chloe?” His voice was husky, his words rife with western tones.

“Yes,” she choked out, cringing just a little beneath the brim of her hat.

“The name’s Max McKee. Your brother owns the spread west of mine.” He adjusted his hat in a gesture that suggested nervousness, and one boot pawed at the rough wood platform. “I think we have a little misunderstanding.”

Joe hadn’t bothered to mention that Maxwell McKee was as handsome as the day was long. She hoped Frank Hilden wasn’t this attractive, else her resolve might desert her and she would never make it to San Francisco.

Realizing she had been staring at the man for more than a polite amount of time, Chloe blinked dry eyes and rolled her gloved fists in her lap. “I’m sorry, Mr. McKee. Did you say something about a misunderstanding?”

“Yes, Ma’am.” Max cleared his throat and ran tanned fingers along the handle of that intimidating pistol. “I just spoke with Billy Compton. Ma’am, there’s something we need to get straight.”

Chloe winced at the angry clip of his words. “And what would that be, Mr. McKee?”

“To be blunt, Ma’am, I wasn’t expecting you.”

“Nor I you,” Chloe said…

Down the drain with Janyce Brawn and her fantasy hero David Gonzales!

Thanks for being with us today. First, would you tell us a bit about yourself? What area of the country do you live in, do you have a family, pets, etc.

Hi Lyndi. Thanks for having me here today. Well, I live in Northwestern Pennsylvania with my husband and a spoiled Boston Terrier named, Gracie. My three grown sons are living their busy lives: one in Chicago and the other two close by. I have used their exploits as fodder for my imagination over the years in my writing and drawing. I mean, it’s not everyday when you come home from a busy day teaching Middle and High school Spanish to find two of your 13 year-old sons on the roof of your house. One was chasing the other with a 2X4 and the third was on the ground laughing. To this day, they will deny this and of course some of their other “adventures”.

Are you a coffee fiend, or do you have another “addiction” you must have on your desk at all times?

I enjoy coffee and have learned to drink it black to avoid the extra calories but I do love a rare cappuccino or caramel macchiato. My son in Chicago is a coffee Connoisseur. He has sent me bags of coffee beans and I have a grinder that I’ll use to grind the coffee beans and my favorite comes from Uruguay. Of course That could change and some other coffee bean will take first place in my taste bud repertoire. That said, I usually only drink 2 cups and occasionally 3 cups a day and mostly before 3:00 PM. So, coffee and a huge 24-32 ounce cup of water are on my desk as I write and draw. In the evenings, I’ll drink decaf tea if I write.

Is your education relevant to your writing, or have you branched off in something entirely different to create? How would you best describe your books?

My education is first as an art teacher, then Spanish and English as a Second Language teacher. I taught before I had my children and returned to it part-time when they were in second grade. Family is most important to me so my teaching was secondary. I wrote and illustrated books with crayons with my twin sister when we were in elementary school. So, when my sons were young and one had a tracheostomy, we did oodles of art and craft projects daily at home. We even used food for edible crafts at lunchtime while they sat in their high chairs.
My husband and I read to them at bedtime and whenever he had a business trip, he’d bring back a new book for them. When my sons were in 8th grade, I started a new job teaching Spanish to 8th graders. I think my sense of humor and language stayed at that age and even at younger levels, so I really enjoy writing middle grade and in-betweener novels.
As an artist, I’ve illustrated one issue a year (10-15 pen and ink illustrations) for the poetry magazine, Time of Singing, for over 20 years.
I think I’d best describe my books as an adventure into the world of imagination. I enjoy escaping into my imagination so I believe children do too, especially with all the problems and concerns today with the virus and politics and stress. Since kids have been doing home schooling and have been away from their friends, a good book that entertains and develops their imaginations in fun ways, is needed all the more.

Tell us about your most recent publication/whichever book you’d like to talk about today?

David and the Drainosaurs is a middle grade novel, geared for ages 8-12. It’s a story about a young boy, David Gonzales who accidentally drops his mother’s diamond ring down the kitchen sink drain. He winds up in a tussle with a dinosaur-like creature who thinks it’s her kingdom’s missing crown. The battle over the ring results in David shrinking and falling down into the kingdom of Drainovia. He learns he has 3 days to find the real missing crown to exchange for the ring or be stuck forever in a land where doors fly, hats teleport, and treachery abounds.

What inspired you to write this story? What interesting thing did you learn or research to write it that you didn’t know before?

This story came about from an exercise I did with one of my elementary ESL students. We picked an alphabet letter (D), then opened a dictionary to the D section then closed our eyes and picked words. We ended up with dinosaur, diamond and drain. We each picked a name that started with D also. We had to write a paragraph using these words. I did the exercise too and this story evolved from a paragraph to a children’s picture book story. I entered it into a writing contest and won first place. The editor that judged the contest said she loved the idea but it needed to be developed into a chapter book or novel. So, it grew and morphed into the novel, David and the Drainosaurs. I think all kids at one time or another have thought about what happens down in a drain.
When I was writing and doing the illustrations, I researched what drains looked like. I also had to research Prince and Princess names that were not already used for this book. It’s amazing how many Princesses there already are.

Is there anything you particularly enjoyed about writing this?

I enjoyed writing the story and developing unique characters. I brainstormed the creation of the psychedelic caterpillar when I was out for lunch with a couple friends. I hear the voices of the hermit crabs and of course David’s cocky sidekick, Oliver, a ferret, who teaches him all about the teleporting hats.

What do you most like about writing? Least like? When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

The thing I like most about writing is letting my imagination go crazy. It’s fun to think up new characters, their names and what they will do with each other. Since I write from my imagination, I’m not a big planner. Of course I know the beginning and the end. It’s the journey that is fun. If I had to write a detailed plan, I’d be dead in the water. It would dry up my creative juices. So I’d say writing synopses, queries, and doing the marketing of writing is not something I enjoy.
I’ve loved reading from first grade on and to me it is the cheapest vacation you can take- anywhere, and any place in time and with whoever you want to “travel”. My twin sister and I used to write stories and plays that we would put on with the neighborhood kids when we were in elementary school.

Do you belong to any writing groups? Are there any writing websites you find particularly useful?

I belong to a variety of writing groups such as Pennwriters, St. Davids Christian Writers, Storytellers’ Academy, and I’ve belonged to Society of Children Book Writers and Illustrators too. I’m especially thrilled to work with my weekly critique group, Fellowship of the Quill- a group of writers from Pennwriters’ Area 1 that meets on Zoom weekly to help each other with our work. Websites? Hmm. I’m still navigating that. I’m on that phase “I just want to create and not worry about the rest.” I do use adobe illustrator draw for my illustrations.

Is there any special music you like to listen to while writing? How does it inspire you?

I generally don’t listen to music when I write. It pulls me out of the “zone” so I just listen to the voices of my characters.

Do you belong to a critique group? What do you find most valuable about the experience?

I love the critique group I mentioned earlier, Fellowship of the Quill. To me, we’re a family and I love how we can respect each other, desire the best for each other and help each other. They have helped the quality of my writing to improve and I’ve made stronger connections with friends and enjoyed their writing paths. We are very diverse and yet we can offer valuable advice. I really thank you, Lyndi, for the connections you’ve given me in the publishing world.

To encourage those still on the path, tell us a little about your path to publication. How many books have you published? How many books did you write before selling one? What do you think was the key to selling that first book?

My illustrations have been published for over 20 years and I’ve had little illustrated prayers and inspirational articles with other illustrations in the Penned From the Heart Anthologies over the years. Likewise some of my poems have been published in Time of Singing poetry magazine.
David and the Drainosaurs is my debut novel. I am working on a companion coloring book and I’ve written book 2 and started book 3 in the Tales of the Teleporting Topsider series.
The key to selling the book I think, is being in a critique group that wants me to do my very best. That and holding each other accountable to write. Making connections at conferences and learning the craft is important too. Of course networking is for me the most valuable recently as I got my publisher by advice and suggestions from my critique partners, especially, from Lyndi, in this case.

What are you writing now? What’s next for you—will you be making personal appearances anywhere our readers can find you?

With COVID, I’m not doing any school visits this year, but I certainly would like to do them and maybe some book signings this summer. We shall see.
As far as what I’m writing now, I’m working on book 3, working on illustrations for a coloring book of book 1 and starting illustrations for book 2. I’m writing a few blog posts, and trying to redo my website. Everything is a work in progress.

Excerpt:

One man in particular caught Nik’s attention. He was long and lean, dressed in a simple blue work shirt and denim pants over hand-tooled boots. He wore a broad-brimmed hat, which he took off to speak. His speech was slow, his vowels drawled, and his grin both shy and genuine.

Rogers called on the man for his opinion. “Now here we have an import—a genuine cowboy from the old Terran system.”

“Cow boy?” Nik asked Valeni. “Is he part bovine, then? He looks human.”

Valeni chuckled. “I suspect he is human. Wait a minute.” She pulled out her handheld communication device and typed in the question. “Hmm. It is a old Terran term. A cowboy herds animals from horseback on a ranch.”

Nik then asked about the term “horse” and the term “ranch,” both of which were unfamiliar. “It seems unlikely such a person could exercise these pursuits in space.”

Valeni shushed them as the man spoke.

“I’m Garrett Rawls, come from a planet called Earth which ain’t in your system here. Not sure how I got to this place, exactly, but somehow I got sucked through some kinda wormhole.”

His dark eyes sparkled with good will. “Been makin’ my way pretty well with my ship, the Six-shooter—some of you know it—mostly keeping to the planets of Marriel and Terza, staying under the radar as much as I can. But just like back on Earth, the government cain’t help trying to keep us good ol’ boys down.”

He looked around the room, stopping to focus on Valeni for a moment. “And good old gals.”
Val blushed, and Nik felt her whole body set change. Rawls’ gaze slid to Nik, curiosity in his eyes. Nik felt a definite weighing of possibility.

Werewolves, vampires and spankings, oh my!

Please welcome Lyndi’s Adventurous Friend Kryssie Fortune!

Her body’s response to their stern dominance cannot be denied, however, and it isn’t long before she is screaming out her intense, helpless pleasure as she is roughly and thoroughly claimed. But will Eli and Dane’s pack accept a human girl or will Cassie be an outsider forever?

Here’s how the werewolves took her from a twenty first century Castle full of vampires.

Excerpt

Cassie tensed when the door opened. The good-looking guy—make that werewolf—she’d spotted earlier charged into her cell. Smiling, he made a beeline for her. Another man followed on his heels, all stern lips, stiff spine, and pitted cheek. The way he stood—fingers spread over his scars as he watched her—meant the scars bothered him. Considering his Lycan origins, his disfigured cheek was the least of her worries.

Both men shared the same athletic build and piercing amber eyes. The one with scars sported a military buzz cut; otherwise, they could have been identical twins. Make that identical Lycan twins.

When the swaggering, sexy one moved toward her, the other nodded and stood back. The pair of them exuded power and confidence.

She’d never seen such stunning males, but she’d heard stories about werewolves—none of them good. Now she was bound and helpless, locked in a room with them. Thanks to the gag, she couldn’t scream for help.

The long-haired one with the hot smile reached out to her. “I’m Eli, princess, and that’s my brother Dane. We’re here to rescue you.”

She shuffled up the bed and curled her legs beneath her. As much as she hated vampires, werewolves made her innards quake.

The short-haired one, Dane, pulled his brother back. “She’s terrified, you fool.”

Eli brushed Dane’s hand from his arm and slowed his movements. “Don’t worry, princess, we’ll get you out of here. Come here and let me unbuckle that gag.”

He took a step toward her, but she cowered away. Puzzled, he glanced across at his brother. Dane gave the breeder a stare designed to cow her into obedience. “Something tells me she doesn’t want rescuing. Is that right, little human?”

Cassie flattened her spine against the bedhead. Even if she could explain, they wouldn’t understand. Worse, they might hunt down her sisters. Not knowing what to do, she whimpered and dropped her gaze.

Werewolves were all fangs and claws—natural born killers—and this pair homed in on her. Any moment now, they’d shift into crazed monsters that lived to hurt and maim. Heart beating overtime, she closed her eyes and waited for them to strike.

ABOUT KRYSSIE: Kryssie Fortune writes the sort of hot sexy books she loves to read. Her paranormal heroes are muscular werewolves, arrogant Fae, seductive vampires or BDSM loving dragons.

Kryssie likes her contemporary heroes ex-military and dominant. Her Byronic and brooding Regency men are troubled survivors of Waterloo. When it comes to women, she writes kick ass females who can hold their own against whatever life – or Kryssie – throws at them.

Kryssie’s pet hates are unhappy endings, and a series that end on a cliff hanger.
Her books are all stand alone even when part of series. Plot always comes before sex, but when her heroines and heroes get together, the sex is explosive and explicit. One review called it downright sensual.

Sixshooter cover reveal!

Yes, ladies and gents, boys and girls, aliens of all natures…it’s time for the big reveal for SIXSHOOTER’s cover! The book itself would be released in the next few weeks, so stay tuned for more details there. Meanwhile…

Faiza reached for the popcorn bowl before Mansur put it on the table. “Thank you.”

He smiled and sat at Beni’s feet; his little body stretched between them. “Do you want anything else?”

“What you, need more time away from the feeding frenzy?” She popped a handful of buttery goodness in her mouth, looking at the screen and him.

He sat and rested an ankle on the opposite knee. “I told you, I’ve changed. So, let’s get into your sick fixation with cannibalism.”

She scoffed. “How many times do I have to tell you? It’s not cannibalism. The Titans aren’t human, not exactly, anyway. They’re shifters. “She moved to the edge of her seat. A giant scooped up a poor townsperson, gnashing the snack between its enormous teeth. “See, that’s what happens when you don’t listen.” Her guffaws burst through the room with the next fighting scene. “Oops, Beni.” She covered her mouth and looked down at him. Barely a move. “Who am I kidding? He can sleep through anything.”

Mansur draped an arm over the back of the sofa. “That’s the truth.” He lifted one of Beni’s arm. It fell flat on the couch.

She waved a hand. “Stop that. We don’t want to take any chances. We’re only done with season one.”

“Wait, how many of these things are we supposed to watch?”

She lifted more popcorn in front of her lips. “It depends. How sorry do you feel? I think at least the first three seasons is enough penance.”

“Three?”

“It’s the weekend.”

“We have prayer.”

“We’ll make them between seasons like we did the last one. All you’re doing is proving that you’re still frightened.”

“Oh, I’m not scared. Fine, three seasons.”

She shoved the popcorn in her mouth, chest swelled with victory.

He winked. “I guess I’ll sleep here.”

That got a gasp out of her, allowing a piece of popcorn to wedge in the back of her throat. She lurched forward, coughing with no noise, grabbing the edge of the table for dear life. Bits of chewed popcorn sprayed in front of her, but the one morsel killing her stayed lodged.

“Crap, Faiza.” Mansur lifted and spun her. He wrapped his strong arms under her breasts and pulled her against him.

She clamped her hands over his hairy forearms. It would have been a turn on if she weren’t dying. The popcorn flew across the room after Mansur’s third try. Her entire belly ached, and pride sat lying on the floor next to the hunk food in a tiny pool of saliva. “Tha—thank …” She bent over, resting her hands on her knees while he stroked her back.

“Just breathe.” His soothing words clashed with a series of explosions bursting from the screen. “Are you all right?”

“Yeah.” She fell back in her seat. He sat across from her on the coffee table. “Humiliated, but fine.”

He laughed. “For real? It’s me, Mansur.”

She met his gaze. The kindness in his gray eyes drove away concerns of dying and flesh-eating giants. He was right. She shouldn’t be embarrassed, not with him. “I know it’s you. I’m glad it’s you.” She couldn’t stop staring at him. “Listen. We’ve been friends since we were babies, but lately—” A knock at the front door stopped her.
