Wolf’s Challenge

Stranger Creatures Book 1

by Christina Lynn Lambert

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Romantic Suspense

When Sydney left Seattle two years ago, she was scared, traumatized, and done with men for good. Now she has a good job, a hobby that’s fast becoming a second career, and best of all, she’s adopted a little girl named Angel. Life is good and Sydney’s not about to let charming lawyer Derrick mess that up, no matter how sexy he is, or how sweet he seems.

Things aren’t always as they appear in the town of Great Oaks, Virginia. Derrick isn’t the ladies’ man Sydney thinks he is, but he does have a few secrets, the least shocking one that he can transform into a powerful wolf at will.

Can Derrick convince Sydney to give him a chance, something more than her elusive maybe? More importantly, should he? He’s still trying to forgive himself for being at the wheel during the accident that killed his son. Losing Sydney when she learns the truth might break him, but he’s pretty sure not having her in his life would be just as bad.

Tiger’s Last Chance

Stranger Creatures Book 3

While working a case, Sean Whitman is tortured for information, drugged, and bitten against his will by a shape shifter. The fallout leaves him jobless, friendless, and dumped by his girlfriend. Needing a fresh start, he leaves town and opens a private investigation business. Learning to live life sober isn’t easy, but he makes it to the two year mark.

When Detective Nikki Jackson with the Great Oaks, Virginia Police Department calls him, accusing him of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s house, Sean can’t help but like the sound of her voice, despite her ridiculous accusations. He’s shocked when she calls him back with an apology then asks for his help as a consultant on a case. On the phone, her sweet, slightly Southern voice captivates him. In person, she’s unlike any other woman he’s encountered, and nearly impossible to resist. But could the sexy detective ever want a man like him?
After Nikki’s last dating disaster, the mountain lion shifter has sworn off men. Then she meets Sean, and with every second she spends around the tall, dark-eyed man, her resolve crumbles. And the fact the guy’s kiss leaves her breathless? Yeah, that no-men idea sounds more and more like a bad idea. But for some reason, despite the undeniable attraction between them, Sean seems determined to push her away.

An investigation into missing refugees leaves Nikki with more questions than answers. Her refusal to let the matter drop leads her to the discovery of a radical political group’s horrifying plot for dominance. Traitors are embedded within the very organizations meant to keep shifters safe. As the list of people she can trust dwindles, Nikki calls on Sean to help her unravel a web of deceit.

Sean realizes pushing Nikki away was a stupid move. So when the sexy, amazing detective contacts him, he jumps at the second chance, dropping everything to fly across the country to help her. And he hates flying. But with her life in danger, he’ll do whatever it takes.
Can Sean and Nikki stop a hate group from carrying out their deadly plans? And if so, will he get one last chance to prove his love for her?

About the Author

A few years ago, I read my first romance novel and I was hooked, so much so that I decided to give the idea of writing a story a chance. Love, courage, hope, and second chances are a few of my favorite themes. My stories include a fair amount of sarcasm, suspense, steam, and violence. When I’m not writing, I enjoy spending time outside and finding ways to avoid cooking. I live in beautiful Virginia with my husband, two daughters, and a sweet, hairy monster of a dog.

When opposites attract, it’s deadly

Welcome to Lyndi’s Adventurous Friends Jeny Heckman! Tell us about your series Heaven and Earth.

Raven Hunter, a musical prodigy, flees to the Hawaiian Islands to pick up the pieces after her marriage to her manager collapses. Instead, she experiences extraordinary and unsettling events that are beyond her understanding.

Living in paradise, marine biologist, Finn Taylor has the unconscious but effortless ability to understand the needs of the animals he cares for. His playboy lifestyle is most men’s fantasy. That is, until the night he meets the shy and elusive new island resident. Suddenly his life no longer feels like his own.

The attraction is undeniable. However, vastly contrasting lives, peculiar dreams, and an unbelievable proclamation that they could be the direct descendants of Poseidon and Apollo threaten to divide them forever. Will they accept their destiny and begin the quest of a lifetime or will they remain in their comfortable yet separate existence?

            Excerpt 1: Dream (139 words)

Raven stood, shackled to the stage with lights flashing, and people screaming and cheering her name. Donovan was in one of his bad moods with eyes glowing hot. She tried to yell that she was bound, but he patently ignored her and turned his attention to another black-haired beauty. Suddenly the crowds began to scream and part. Confused, she looked into the distance and saw a great wave hurtling toward her without

breaking. Raven turned to Donovan and screamed for him to release her, but he was now running too, running with the new woman, to a new life. Music, reckless and wild, simmered in her blood, moving painfully throughout her body and fire burned in her belly, as hot as the sun. It seemed to liquefy her bonds. Now free, would she cower, run, or stand her ground?

Excerpt 2: Meeting Each Other (172words)

The crowd parted just enough for her to behold the most adorable animal she’d ever seen. It was a seal, maybe four feet in length, with a torpedo-shaped body, short, steel-gray fur, and a white spotted underbelly. A bulbous head, containing intelligent black eyes, smiled back at her, causing her infectious laugh to broadcast over the collective.

A man she hadn’t noticed knelt next to the seal and turned his head slowly at the sound of her laugh, seemingly searching for someone or something. He wore dark mirrored sunglasses, but somehow, she knew the power of the gaze behind the glasses would be transfixing. With the descending sun on her back, the pendant she wore grew hot and felt like a kind of pressure pushing her back. Raven couldn’t take her gaze off the man as the sun shone on his face, making it awash with light. She could tell his hair was very light and that he had a short beard and muscular body.

The weight of his stare scared her.

Excerpt 3: Cliff Hanger (265 words)

“So, that was pretty amazing—different,” Finn stated. “I guess I thought you did—more—I don’t know.” He gestured with his hands, searching for inspiration.

“Just more,” she confirmed. “You can leave it at that. I’m trying to get out of my old way of doing things. I never really liked that style.”

“Why’d you do it then?”

“Um, Donovan. That’s my ex-husband,” she clarified. “He was also my manager and always said elaborate productions were the best way to grab a broader audience. I always wanted to do my own songs.” She saw Finn’s blank face and clarified, “The songs and music I do, did, for Donovan were all written by other people.”

He sipped his beer, deciding not to like Donovan. “And you hated that, right?”

“Loathed it. I wrote a lot of songs, but he never wanted to use them; too simplistic for mainstream or something. And the industry is changing. He wanted me performing to my base, all the time.”

“Why didn’t you tell him to fuck off?” She burst out laughing.

“I couldn’t say that.”

“Why not?”

“Because he’s the manager, he knew what he was doing.”

“You’re the talent.”

“Yeah, but a lot of people have talent. He created the magic.”

“Magic?” he said derisively. “He tell you that?” “It’s true.”

“It’s bullshit.”

“It’s not bullshit. How many records have you sold?”

“None, but I know a manipulator when I hear one.”

A leaf fell onto her shoulder, and he brushed it aside, looking into her eyes. “And talent is the magic, that’s why they call it talent.”

Colton Stone is a newly traded tight end whose reputation is as battered as his football helmet. When he receives a vacation invitation from his new teammates, he accepts. There he collides with Dr. Lillian Morgan, a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon, and doesn’t know what to think.

A widow with two children, Lilly is looking forward to her friends’ wedding. When she meets Colton Stone, his arrogant attitude only makes her long for the love she took for granted. Lilly struggles between letting go of her perfect past for an uncertain future.

Strange events occur, out of the realm of normal consciousness. When black energy touches their world Colt and Lilly become the pawns of the immortal Greek gods. Is the love developing between them natural, or part of a larger prophecy?

EXCERPT 1: Dream (244 words)

Colt’s body temperature heated until his helmet, now that of a Trojan, melted and became part of his skull. Painful, thick, fire plumes ignited from the sides of his head and curved toward the sky, until they solidified in a solid line down the middle of the helmet. Black snake-like smoke wafted up from the earth and encircled his ankles and wrists, locking him into place.

He looked over at Lilly, who now knelt helpless as her skin became dusky, then turned a brilliant shade of blue. However, the color became an iridescent hue that reminded him of something just outside the confines of his mind. Her skin bubbled, separated, and formed into thousands of compact hairs. Small points protruded from her shoulders and down her arms until they freed themselves from the surface of her skin, as she screamed. Several long, hollow shoots grew, lengthening into the elegant, arching rods, as more buds sprouted from them and turned into thready feathers. As the feathers lengthened, green and blue eyes opened in intervals. At a screech of transformation, Lilly turned into a peacock, whose tail plumed out in a perfect fan. A feathered diadem lifted from her skull and the beautiful eyes all blinked at him. He wanted to mate with her, devour her, possess her, and bellowed out an unearthly warrior battle cry. Breaking his bonds, he charged at her.

EXCERPT 2: Meeting Each Other (242 words)

Lilly looked down at the football, lying prone and guilty in the sand, as realization hit her.

“Oh my God, Que! Are you okay?”

She examined Que’s head and neck checking for injuries, with rapid authority. A small goose egg already formed just above her right temple. A tiny cut opened in her eyebrow, from her broken sunglasses now laying in the sand, causing a small bead of blood to well up.

Used to the recklessness of her son and his friends regarding the sport, Lilly turned, gearing up for an impressive tongue lashing to teenagers.

“What in the hell…” she bellowed, turning around and smacking her face into the sweaty muscular chest of a massive redhead. Refusing to let the fourteen-inch height difference and the hundred and sixty pounds of additional weight intimidate her, Lilly balled her small fists on her hips, shifted her gaze up, and narrowed her eyes.

“What in the hell is the matter with you? You’re on a crowded beach with a bunch of young children and families. You’re a grown-ass man. Can’t you catch a football?” When he stared down at her in fascinated disbelief, she continued. “There is a wide-open park just over there,” she said, stabbing her finger in the general vicinity. “Maybe you and your little friends”— she looked over at all the massive men in his group, but continued undaunted—“should go over there and pull your heads out of your asses.”

EXCERPT 3: Important Conversation (244 words)

“You couldn’t have known,” Colt said.

“I’m a doctor,” she retorted. “I’m trained to know.”

“Oh, bullshit.” She drew her brows together and looked at him with irritation. Undaunted, he continued. “You were his wife, not his doctor.” Glancing back at the picture, he drank from his glass. “He was a young guy…looked fit…father of two.” Colt turned to look at her again. “Young, fit, fathers of two don’t get stage four pancreatic cancer and die in ten months. He wasn’t your patient, Lillian, and you weren’t looking at him like a patient. He was your husband, and he died.”

“Colt.” She took a breath, placed a hand on his, and backed up a little. “Look, I know you want something, but we’re broken here, and I can’t give you what you…”

“It’s not bullshit. It’s how I feel. I’ve got kids to think about and responsibilities. You want easy and I’m not that.”

“You don’t even know me, Lilly.”

“I know. That’s what I’ve been trying to say.”

“No, that’s what you’re trying to use as an excuse. Those kids aren’t damaged because of their dad, you are. Those kids have a mom who loves them and makes damn sure they aren’t damaged. You’re afraid to try, so you hide behind your dead husband.”

“How dare you be so callous?”

“How dare you use your husband to get out of trying again? You’re a beautiful, intelligent woman and your life isn’t over.”

“Adventure” doesn’t half sum up the life of an RFC pilot in World War I

Welcome to Lyndi’s Adventurous Friends author Kathy Otten!

(I must confess, Kathy is part of my excellent critique group, and this book is amazing!!)

Captain Elliot Bainbridge and Lieutenant Harry March, the characters in my new, historical romance short story Heart of Ash, are British pilots in the Royal Flying Corps, fighting during World War I.

While the notion of becoming a pilot at the forefront of aviation, these eager, young pilots, many of whom were in their late teens and early twenties, were only given an average of seventeen hours of instruction (expanded to fifty hours later in the war), with as little as five hours of flying time in planes they would not fly in combat. Approximately 8,000 pilots died during training between 1914 and 1918. If they survived, they were sent to France to fight Germans who had better planes and better training.

Once stationed in France, pilots engaged in dogfights in machines made of canvas, wire, and wood. They had few instruments and would have to flip the engine off and on to slow down for landing. They flew without parachutes. Averaged together, this gave a pilot in the early part of the war a life expectancy of eleven days.

Over confidence was usually fatal, while self-doubt could give a pilot the edge he needed to stay alive. Eventually, the more flight and combat experience a pilot gained, the better his chances of survival.

While these men played football, drank, and sang together, they seldom allowed themselves to grow close. Sometimes they never knew each other’s full name. Men were there and then they were gone. Speaking about death aloud was avoided at all cost. Instead, when a pilot was killed, they spoke of it in obscure terms, such as, “So and So has gone west.” They believed each man had predetermined amount of luck and worried about the day that luck would run out. Nightmares were common. Nothing was more terrifying to these young men than the possibility of burning to death. Some men kept a loaded pistol in the cockpit, and a few chose to jump to their death rather than burn.

But while the life of a pilot was easier than living in a trench, it was no less dangerous, and for the two heroes in my story, they each had to decide whether or not it was worth risking their hearts.

Blurb: In the skies over France during the Great War, the life expectancy of a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps is measured in days. Captain Elliot “Ash” Bainbridge is certain he’ll be the next pilot sent spinning to earth in a ball of fire. Not because the Germans will shoot him down, but because God will punish him for daring to love another man. When Ash met Lieutenant Harry March, their attraction was instant. But Harry hates Ash’s fatalistic attitude. He believes in capturing the moment. Can Ash set aside his fear of death and take a chance on love? Or should he try to keep his heart safe from hurt forever?

The tip of the cigarette glowed red as March inhaled. Then he stepped back as he blew out a stream of smoke, the odor overpowering that last trace of the sandalwood Elliot loved.

He tipped the shrinking match into the bowl of his pipe, drawing the mellow, smoky flavors into the back of his throat. He raised his chin to squarely meet March’s intense gaze. The hazel color wasn’t discernible in this light, but in the sun his eyes sparkled with green, then softened with brown in the shade.

Sharp pain seared Elliot’s fingers. His arm jerked back, and he gave his hand a quick shake, extinguishing the tiny flame. He tossed down the match, and with the toe of his boot, twisted the lucifer deep into the ground.

“Was it the fire?” Though March spoke in little more than a whisper, the intensity of his words carried in the damp air. “That why you froze? Bloody hell, two Albatros dropped from the clouds right on your tail. If I hadn’t been there—”

Elliot focused on the scuffed toe of his boot as he continued to twist his foot back and forth against the match.

“I apologize.” He straightened, drew deep on his pipe, and slowly exhaled through his nose. “Rude of me not to say thank you.”

March brought his cigarette to his lips. A moment later he exhaled. “And are you?”

“Am I what?”

“Thankful.” Elliot took a few steps forward, away from his machine. He turned.

March hadn’t moved. He flicked his cigarette. “Because I don’t think you are.”

Space pirates, lost children, new love and swift betrayal: TRIAD #MFRWHooks

Trezanna Len (front), with Estrella and Catava, the three women commanders of TRIAD

After five years of silence, the Arkosian space pirates are back to terrorize the sector where Trezanna Len fights to save her Solarii colony, a small group of Terran descendants settled on the planet Induna. To survive, the Solarii need assistance soon. Trezanna could ask for help from the neighboring group called Dragonfleet, but its cruel leader Estrella Drake has been on a rampage to annex Solarii space. Estrella would never agree to an alliance with the Solarii. Or would she?

The pirates seemed to be retreating toward the moon, and Miramar, only one still firing indiscriminately. The other triggered a warning klaxon denoting the detection of a radiation leak. She sounded a retreat, then hurried to catch up, flying on a higher trajectory than they to keep her sheep all in line.

Suddenly a blinding flash of light signaled the pirate ship exploding, and for a few moments, Trezanna could see nothing out her front window. It was the sound she heard first, Winston’ cry of anguish as the Whirlwind encountered flying debris from the demolished Arkosian. Jagged metal cut into the ship’s machinery and opened its hull in a burst of silent flame. The ship and its feisty pilot Shelby Hussard were no more.

One moment of silence seemed to draw out into many, until the sky went black again. Stunned aviators realized one by one what had happened as the group pulled away to rendezvous. A burst of foul language came over the comm as Winston turned his ship and headed straight back for the remaining Arkosian cruiser.

“Winston!  Where ya going, man?” Pomeroy’s voice was genuinely distressed. “Git your ass back here!”

When love insists, the writer must follow… Surrender Love

Please welcome Lyndi’s Adventurous Friend, KAYELLE ALLEN!!!

My immortal character Luc Saint-Cyr, who’s the hero in Surrender Love, has been in multiple books in my story universe. The ending hasn’t always been that great for him, and my readers wanted him to get a happy ever after. Surrender Love is a romance between the jaded Luc and the naïve Izzorah. I’d only intended the story as an affair for Luc, because I had already planned his forever love. I couldn’t introduce that person yet, but felt I needed to at least give Luc a happy for now.

Once Luc met Izzorah and got to know him, I swear it was as if this alpha male (whom I had created, mind you) turned to me and put his foot down. “I want Izzorah. I want him forever. Make him immortal. Give him to me!” Well… when you read any book with Luc in it, you find out pretty quickly that what Luc wants, Luc gets. So I said a fast yessir and got busy figuring out how to make that happen.

Because the dates of when Izzorah would have been born, when the planet was discovered by Luc’s people, and how old he had to be for the story to be a romance, I had to finagle a lot of details.

Turns out, it worked out for the best. It gave me an entirely new subplot and at least four new characters I could chase after in future books. Still trying to decide if that’a good thing, or not. I’ll write some of their stories, and get back to you.

In the meantime, please enjoy the opening scene from Surrender Love.

Surrender Love Excerpt

An Immortal Alpha Male / Submissive Alien MM Science Fiction Romance Novel from Kayelle Allen.

Luc Saint-Cyr slumped in the back of his hoversine, putting off the inevitable, because as bad as it felt being dumped, pity made things worse. All the oh-poor-Luc-how-are-you-doing questions made him want to rip heads off people. How did they think he was doing? He went home alone every night and faced the same four walls with no one inside them but himself and his android servants. As much as he appreciated them, the androids didn’t love him.

Apparently, neither had Wulf Gabriel.

His driver swung open the door.

Luc stepped out and straightened his coat. While James docked the vehicle with the rest of the fleet, Luc trudged to the railing. Atop the Nizamrak Building, over two hundred stories above ground, he drew in the crisp evening air of autumn. He let it all out, lifting his face to the night sky.

A chilled breeze, heavy with the scent of rain, blew up the sheer sides of the building and buffeted his skin. To the east, a low boom of thunder began and rumbled overhead, threatening storms. A sleepliner docking at the starport to the west vibrated the air, its roar muffled. Straight ahead, the white marble walls of the Conqueror’s palace took up eight square city blocks and reflected as much light as the moon. Tarth City spread around it, a splendor of lights ablaze all the way to the snow-capped mountains on the far horizon.

Closer in, Destine Pietan Stadium sent its bright glow upward, casting a white sheen against flat clouds. Vehicles streamed in one portico and out the other. He recalled his assistant saying a rock group managed by one of his companies was performing tonight. Iron Soul? Kumwhatmay? For the life of him, he could not say.

Thomas Gabriel Stadium, he refused to look toward. Named in honor of Wulf’s late father and built at Luc’s personal expense, the state of the art sports complex had been presented to Wulf as a gift for their fifth anniversary, three weeks ago. Days before they broke up.

Outrageous headlines screamed his colossal failure in every language in the Empire. He’d built that place to underscore the legacy of a dear friend, but the media made Luc look like a clueless chump. Perhaps that’s all he was.

He gripped the handrail and braced himself against it, arms stiff, head down. Up here, the hustle and hubbub of the city and the whoosh of traffic faded into the background. No matter how late he worked, when he returned, the empty penthouse taunted him with memories.

He pushed himself away from the railing and plodded toward the Loft.

A human got over old lovers and fell in love again. He, well accustomed to the brevity of mortal relationships, should do the same. So why did it feel like the weight of the empire crushed his chest?

Luc was Sempervian. Immortal.

Wulf was human. Mortal.

Luc would get over the loss in time, wouldn’t he? If there was anything a Sempervian had plenty of, it was time.

Surrender Love

With his heart freshly broken, does he dare to love again?

Luc is a 12,000-year-old immortal alpha male, and the most powerful man in an intergalactic empire of 22 planets. When his mortal lover walks away, the smart thing is to move on and forget, but how can he bear his loneliness, life after life?

When Izzorah landed on Tarth five years ago, he’d been nothing but a feline-humanoid alien from the backwoods of a distant world, but he made himself into a rock star. When Luc rescues Izzy from a terrible situation, the adorable Kin hero, who has an almost superpower ability to smell every subtle change of emotion, falls for the heartbroken leader.

This might be the soulmate Luc has hoped for. The one person to whom he can surrender his heart. But to bring his beloved closer means revealing every damning secret, every twisted truth, and every hidden lie…

* Adorable feline-humanoid hero may induce swooning.

* Heart-melting romance likely to cause palpitations.

* Immortal with a tragic past may cause heartbreak.

* Teary-eye trigger: Extreme happy-ever-after.

* Additional concern: May induce insatiable desire for sequels. (Fortunately, the cure for this is near. Ring of the Dragon out April 16, Forever Love out May 13)
